No. 8GB is the floor only for browse-and-email use; modern Chrome with 10 tabs already eats 6GB. 16GB is the realistic minimum for productivity in 2026. 32GB if you do photo/video editing or run Docker. Apple Silicon Macs run leaner because of unified memory, but 16GB is still the smart base config.

MacBook wins on battery life (15+ hours), build quality, resale value, and trackpad. Windows wins on raw price-to-performance, gaming, software flexibility, and repairability. If you use Adobe, Office, or web tools, both work identically. If you're in iOS/iPhone ecosystem already, MacBook integration (AirDrop, iMessage, continuity) is genuinely useful.

13-14 inches is the sweet spot — fits any airplane tray, slips into a 14L backpack, weighs under 3.5 lbs. 15-16 inches if you need a desktop replacement and don't carry it daily. 17 inches is for gaming/workstation use only — won't fit most economy airline trays.

Manufacturer-refurbished (Apple, Dell Outlet, Lenovo Outlet, Microsoft Refurbished) is genuinely a steal — same warranty as new at 15-30% off. Avoid third-party Amazon refurbs unless the listing specifies the seller and warranty length explicitly. Used business laptops (ThinkPad T-series) are the best $400-600 value.

Quality laptops last 5-7 years before feeling slow; high-end models (MacBook Pro, ThinkPad X1) often hit 8-10. The bottleneck is usually RAM and storage capacity, not CPU. Picking 16GB+ RAM and 512GB+ SSD extends useful life by years. Cheap $400 laptops often feel obsolete within 2-3 years due to underspec.
