What to pack for Puerto Vallarta in July when it is hot and humid

Puerto Vallarta in July is hot, humid, and wet in the afternoons, with highs sitting near 32 C and a rainy season that shows up like clockwork. Pack for that reality and the trip is easy. Pack for a dry beach postcard and you will be miserable by day two.

Trending in Mexico tonight: a lot of people are checking the Puerto Vallarta forecast, which usually means one thing. They are about to travel there and are not sure what to bring. So here is a practical list built around July heat and afternoon storms, starting with the one item most people forget, a packable rain jacket.

What July on the Jalisco coast actually feels like

This is rainy season, not a drought. Mornings are often bright and sticky, and by mid afternoon you can get heavy, short thunderstorms that clear as fast as they arrive. That rhythm changes how you pack. You want quick dry travel shirts that shrug off a downpour and dry by dinner, not cotton tees that stay damp and smell.

Humidity is the quiet enemy. It keeps sweat from evaporating, so a small portable neck fan and a cooling towel earn their space in the bag. Locals deal with it by slowing down at midday, and you should copy that. The ocean matters here too. Pacific swell alerts, called mar de fondo, occasionally close beaches, so check the flags before you swim.

The gear that actually matters

Sun first. The UV index runs high, and you will be outside more than you think. A broad reef safe sunscreen protects both your skin and the reefs you might snorkel, and a wide packable sun hat does more than any amount of reapplying. Add polarized sunglasses because the glare off the water is real.

Feet next, and you need two pairs. A grippy water shoes set for rocky spots and boat days, and comfortable walking sandals for the cobblestone streets of the old town, which are pretty and brutal on cheap flip flops. Bring a dry bag for phones and cameras on any boat or beach day, because the spray and the rain will find your electronics otherwise.

Then the small stuff that saves the trip. A refillable water bottle with a filter, since staying hydrated in that heat is not optional and the tap water is a gamble for visitors. A travel insect repellent for the evenings near the water. And a portable power bank, because between maps, photos, and translation apps your phone will die by afternoon.

What to skip

Leave the heavy jeans and the third pair of dress shoes. Puerto Vallarta is casual, and denim in that humidity is punishment. Skip the giant hard suitcase too. A soft carry on backpack handles cobblestones and boat docks far better than spinner wheels. And do not bother packing a bulky beach umbrella from home. Rent one there and spend the luggage space on a light beach blanket instead.

One more skip. Do not overpack clothes. You will live in shorts, linen shirts, and swimwear, and most hotels have cheap laundry. Two or three outfits plus swim gear covers a week easily.

A simple packing rule

If an item cannot handle getting rained on, or does not dry fast, leave it home. That single test sorts most of the bag. If you want a real camera for the trip rather than just your phone, our camera buying checklist is worth a read first, and for staying safe on tap water while traveling, the reasoning in our clean water guide carries over to a good filter bottle.

Puerto Vallarta in July rewards people who pack light, plan around the afternoon rain, and respect the sun. Do that and the rainy season stops being a problem and starts being the reason the hills are green and the crowds are thinner. Grab the travel day pack and go.
