Social Media Tips That Work for Any Niche or Platform

I've worked in three different niches across social media and the tactics that worked were surprisingly consistent regardless of industry or platform. What changes is the tone and format — the underlying logic stays the same. Here are the ones I keep coming back to.

Quality of followers beats quantity, every time

The most important realization I had was that ten thousand followers who are mildly curious about my topic are worth less than one thousand followers who genuinely care. The latter group buys, shares, and recommends. The former inflates your metrics and does nothing else. I stopped chasing raw follower numbers and started thinking about whether each piece of content would attract the right person. content creation tool choices, posting times, and platform selection all flow from this: optimize for relevance, not reach.

Educational content is the highest-leverage format

In every niche I've been in, the posts that performed best were tutorials and how-tos — content that taught something useful. People share information that helped them, save it to return to, and follow the accounts that consistently deliver it. The promotional posts that follow educational ones perform better too, because you've already demonstrated that you're worth listening to. A video editing app is worth learning for this reason alone: instructional video gets saved and shared at much higher rates than static image posts.

Use multiple platforms and link them together

Different platforms reach different segments of your audience. I promote my social accounts on my website, my social accounts cross-reference each other, and I ask my email list to follow on the platforms they prefer. This web of connections means a new follower on any one platform eventually connects to the rest. The key is asking your existing audience directly which platforms they prefer — poll them, literally — before you invest time in a new channel. A link in bio tool makes it easy to route traffic from any single profile to your full ecosystem.

Watch the competition honestly and then differentiate

I spend an hour a month reviewing what competitors in my niche are doing well. Not to copy them — to identify what they're not doing that I could do better. If every account in your niche posts similar content in similar formats, the account that does something genuinely different will stand out. It could be better customer service in comments, more honest product reviews, longer-form educational content, or a specific personality that no one else has claimed. Find the gap and fill it. A social media monitoring tool tracks competitor activity without you having to manually check every account.

What I'd skip

Joining every new platform the moment it launches. Early adopters sometimes win big, but more often they waste time on platforms that fade. Let a new platform prove audience retention for at least six months before investing seriously.

The bottom line: the fundamentals of social media marketing are stable across niches and platforms. Target quality over quantity, teach rather than advertise, connect your channels, and differentiate from competitors honestly. Everything else is platform-specific execution on top of these foundations.
