The affiliate programs that have earned me the most money over time were not the ones with the highest commission rates. They were the ones whose products my readers genuinely needed, whose brands my readers recognised, and whose checkout process didn't lose buyers halfway through. Finding the right affiliate is primarily an audience-matching exercise, not a commission-chasing one.

Start with what your audience buys, not what pays you most

The most reliable framework for evaluating affiliate programs begins from the reader's perspective. Picture your site's typical visitor: what problem brought them to your article? What product would solve that problem at a price they'd consider? What brand do they already associate with quality in this space? The answers to those questions describe an affiliate program worth pursuing.

A gardening content site whose audience buys physical tools, seeds, and raised bed kits should be promoting those categories regardless of which commission rates look attractive. Promoting a high-commission digital product about gardening software to an audience that showed up looking for soil amendments is a mismatch that will produce low click-through rates regardless of how good the commission is.

The two main sourcing channels

Large affiliate network platforms — ShareASale, CJ Affiliate, Impact Radius, Awin — aggregate programs from hundreds of brands and let you browse by category, search by commission rate, and review EPC (earnings per click) data that reflects real performance across other affiliates. For any niche, these networks are the fastest way to build a program shortlist. The EPC number is particularly useful: it normalises earnings across different commission structures so you can compare a 5% commission program with high average order value against a 30% commission program with low average order value.

Direct brand programs are the second channel. Many brands run their own affiliate programs outside the networks — sometimes paying higher commissions because there's no network middleman fee. Finding them requires a Google search pattern: "[brand name] affiliate program" or "[niche keyword] affiliate program." If a brand's website has a footer link for "partners" or "affiliates," that's usually a direct program.

Frequency of sale vs. commission size

A sale that happens three times per week at $12 commission earns $1,872 per year. A sale that happens four times per year at $80 commission earns $320. Before committing your content inventory to a high-commission program, estimate realistic sale frequency by looking at the product's price point, brand recognition, and the purchase readiness of your audience when they land on your review.

Established consumer brands with products in the $30 to $150 range in broadly-appealing categories convert consistently. Speciality or high-consideration products convert less frequently and benefit from content that does more explicit pre-selling work.

Niche alignment is non-negotiable

The worst-performing affiliate placements I have made all had one cause in common: the product wasn't a natural fit for the reader who arrived at that article. A cooking blog promoting coding software because the software company paid 40% commission is a case study in why commission rate alone is a terrible selection criterion. Your readers' trust is the asset. Recommending products that don't serve them spends that trust without income to show for it.

Evaluating program quality beyond the commission

Check cookie duration, payment threshold, and minimum payout options before applying. A program with a $500 minimum payout means small sites wait months before their first cheque. Look for programs with payouts at $50 or below. Also check the merchant's own website for checkout friction — a poor mobile checkout experience kills conversions regardless of how good your article is.

What I'd skip

Skip single-product affiliate programs from unknown brands that offer very high commissions. The combination of unknown brand and high commission usually means the merchant is compensating for low conversion rates — their product doesn't sell well through channels that actually drive qualified traffic.

Bottom line

The best affiliate portfolio for any niche site is built from programs where three things align: the product solves a genuine problem for your specific audience, the brand is one they'd recognise and trust, and the commission rate at realistic conversion frequency produces meaningful revenue. Find the intersection of those three criteria and you have programs worth writing content around.
