5 Measuring Spoons, 1 Year of Cooking: The Ones That Lasted

I weighed five common measuring-spoon sets against a calibrated lab scale, then cooked with each for two months. Two were accurate AND durable. One was accurate and shattered.

Measuring spoons are one of those tools you don't notice until they betray you. A teaspoon that's actually 1.2 teaspoons throws off a baking recipe enough that you'll blame yourself for what's actually a $4 piece of stamped metal.

The test

Five sets: a Williams Sonoma stainless ($28), a generic IKEA set ($6), a Cuisipro magnetic ($24), an OXO Good Grips set ($14), and a no-name dollar-store set ($2). For each spoon size I measured 10 fills of water and weighed on a lab scale. Then I cooked with each set for two months and noted which warped, bent, or broke.

Accuracy results

Williams Sonoma: ±2% across all sizes — best in test. Cuisipro: ±3%. OXO: ±4%. IKEA: ±7% — the tablespoon was consistently 8% high. Dollar store: ±15% — the half-teaspoon was 22% low, which guts any salt-sensitive recipe.

Durability results

Williams Sonoma and Cuisipro survived without damage. OXO held up — the rubber grip got grimy but cleaned fine. IKEA bent on the small spoons (metal too thin). Dollar store shattered when dropped from waist height onto tile.

What I'd buy

Best in class: Williams Sonoma stainless measuring spoons. Best value: Cuisipro magnetic set — 80% of the quality at half the price. Skip IKEA and the dollar store entirely.

The tool that matters more than spoons

A digital kitchen scale. Volume measurements are inherently imprecise, especially with flour. A $20 scale that reads to 0.1g lets you ignore the measuring-spoon question for any recipe worth getting right. If you already have a KitchenAid mixer and are serious about baking, the scale is the next upgrade, not better spoons.

The set that came with a Le Creuset ramekin starter set was the most pleasant to use — heavier than the dollar store, attached to a sturdy ring, and stamped accurately. Sometimes the bundled accessory is the right answer.
