When a skin problem shows up, the internet's standard advice is to buy seven products and overhaul your routine immediately. The problem is that piling new products onto already-stressed skin often makes things worse. The better move is to respond proportionately — one problem, one targeted step.

Acne: prevention first, treatment second

Most acne responds well to a simple, consistent routine before it ever needs a dedicated treatment. Tight-collared clothes trapping sweat against your back, pillowcases that go a week without washing, touching your face repeatedly — these are often bigger contributors than whatever cleanser you are using.

When acne is already present, a mild acne cleanser with salicylic acid twice a day is usually sufficient for mild to moderate breakouts. The goal is reducing excess oil and keeping pores clear, not stripping the skin down to nothing. Scrubbing hard or trying to squeeze blemishes creates inflammation that lingers longer than the original spot. Over-the-counter acne treatment products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid handle most cases without a prescription. If nothing over-the-counter is working after a few weeks, a dermatologist can prescribe something stronger.

Dry skin: apply first, apply right

Dry skin is mostly a moisture-retention problem, which makes a good moisturizer the main tool. The catch is application timing. Moisturizer applied to dry skin seals in relatively little. Applied to damp skin — right after washing, before the water fully evaporates — it locks in significantly more. That one change can make an inexpensive moisturizer perform like a premium one.

For severe dryness, look for a moisturizer containing humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin alongside an occlusive agent like petrolatum. The humectant draws moisture and the occlusive prevents it from escaping. Avoid hot showers in the interim; hot water strips the skin's natural oil barrier fast.

Brown spots: sun protection above all else

Sun-induced dark spots form from UV exposure accumulating over years, which means the most effective treatment is also prevention. A sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, used daily regardless of weather, is the single most evidence-backed step for both preventing new spots and stopping existing ones from darkening further.

For fading existing spots, products containing niacinamide, azelaic acid, or kojic acid have decent evidence. Prescription retinoids are more potent. In all cases, patience is required — skin turnover takes weeks, and hyperpigmentation can take months to visibly fade.

What I'd skip

Multi-ingredient "blemish banishing" kits that combine an exfoliant, a spot treatment, and a mask tend to overlap in actives in ways that irritate rather than heal. I would also skip the impulse to treat dry skin and oily skin simultaneously with separate product lines layered on top of each other — that usually causes reactivity. Address the primary problem, stabilize, then address secondary concerns.

Bottom line: The most common skin conditions — acne, dryness, and brown spots — each respond to specific, targeted responses. Pair the right active to the right problem, use a facial cleanser suited to your skin type, apply sunscreen every day, and let each step settle for a few weeks before adding more. If something is not working after a reasonable trial, that is when a dermatologist's input is genuinely useful.
